LOVEFiLM is by far the largest DVD rental provider in the UK. Most of this growth has come from word of mouth recommendation and each month more than 20% of LOVEFiLM's new members come from customer referrals. That means that on the whole, their customers are a pretty happy bunch.
Because
LOVEFiLM have the biggest customer base they're able to invest more than any
other provider into their service. This is demonstrated by new initiatives such
as the LOVEFiLM player which can stream films straight to your TV. PS3 and Xbox owners can now get on-demand access to thousands of films through the LOVEFiLM player. The films are free to stream as long as you're on a plan that costs more than £5.99 a month.
Also LOVEFiLM
invest a substantial amount of money into their website, working with the best
creative agencies to bring you a web experience which is unrivalled. In fact,
they're the third biggest online film destination in the UK with over 4 million
visitors each month.
So with LOVEFiLM so far ahead of the competition how do the other providers compare?
The only other major player is Blockbuster. Cinema Paradiso is much smaller so we'll come onto them later. (Tesco and EasyCinema are run by LOVEFiLM).
Blockbuster can be a good option if you regularly use your high street Blockbuster to rent movies. Their plans let you combine in-store and online rentals which can work out to be the most convenient option for some people. They are also very quick at sending new releases. However, unlike all other providers they don't offer a free trial. If you know that Blockbuster is the one you want then this might not be too much of a problem. If you're just looking to try online DVD rental out then it make sense to go for one with a free trial.
Cinema Paradiso are the smaller provider. They've been going for over five years but have a relatively small membership base. They cater to a niche audience of film enthusiasts and specialise in World Cinema with films from over 40 different countries. LOVEFiLM also offer an extensive World Cinema collection so if this is what you're after we recommend checking them both out.
